Toyota notes that solar power will be deeply important for our global future. As a cleaner option to the fossil fuels used throughout the past century, solar energy is essential to environmental conservation. To spotlight this innovative and sustainable power source, Toyota has created the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, now ready for visitors at its Research & Development facility in Michigan.

Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy

Developed via a cooperative project between Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this gorgeous model pairs solar technology with an elegant color scheme. Going way beyond basic visual style, the display generates actual power. Finding diverse alternative energy paths is necessary to sustain our contemporary world as finite fossil fuel options decrease.

Constructed to a 1/6th fractional scale, this carbon-neutral, self-sustaining sculpture features 11 triangular columns. By employing special lenticular lenses, the design team was able to mask the solar cells while keeping their collection potential active. Simply put, the installation serves as an amazing piece of art and a working ecological advancement that produces electricity.

The origins of this brilliant model go back a long way. While the official build mandate was issued in 2020, its underlying science was created more than ten years back. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, stated that TMC initiated studies into nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years before, with the goal of incorporating them into solar fields.

Although funded by TMC, APPO spearheaded the program for North American drivers, managing the finances and guiding its retail adaptation. Now, this Vivid colored solar system can be integrated directly into regular solar grids while preserving over 90% of the hardware's original energy efficiency.

Co-project leader Brian Woods is just as excited to watch this Vivid Solar technology transition into use. "When you think about the possibilities for corporate signage and ads, the financial ROI is substantial," he notes, adding that this technology connects a green power system with limitless brand potential.
